Introduction

Students at the University of Virginia (UVA) must have a proper health insurance plan throughout the academic term. To secure proper access to medical care for all its students, UVA automatically enrolls students in its student health insurance plan (SHIP). However, other students with similar health coverage may opt out of this plan by applying for a health insurance waiver before the deadline.

The University’s plans are expensive but provide comprehensive benefits, which are sometimes not needed by a student. Other providers, like Student Cover, provide accessible and complete plans that fulfill students' needs at an affordable rate, which also meet the requirements of the UVA waiver criteria.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the UVA health insurance plan and why students should opt for alternative plans.

          What is an Insurance Waiver?

A health insurance waiver is a formal process or request through which students who have an existing health insurance policy that meets or exceeds university standards can opt out of the default university insurance.

In simpler terms, if you already have a qualifying policy, whether through a parent, employer, or independent provider such as Studentcover, you can submit proof of that plan to avoid being charged for the UVA SHIP.

To be eligible, your alternative plan must:

                  • The plan provides in-patient care and outpatient care coverage (including visits for behavioral health) within a 75-mile radius of the Charlottesville area.
                  • Coverage for emergency-only care (out-of-state Medicaid) does not satisfy this requirement.
                  • The plan is provided by a company licensed to do business in the U.S. with:
                  • A U.S. claims office
                  • A U.S. phone number
                  • Plan literature available in English
                  • Benefits provided in accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
                  • The following programs do not qualify as comparable coverage:
                  • Travel insurance
                  • Reimbursement programs of any kind
                  • The plan provides in-patient treatment and outpatient treatment coverage for substance abuse (both alcohol and drug abuse) within a 75-mile radius of the Charlottesville area.
                  • Coverage for emergency-only care (out-of-state Medicaid) does not satisfy this requirement.
                  • My coverage will remain in effect for all semesters in which I am enrolled for the 2025–2026 academic year.
                  • If I lose coverage at any point during the academic year, I will:
                  • Request to be enrolled in the UVA student health plan at a prorated rate, or
                  • Provide my new health insurance for review.
                  • I will be held financially responsible for payment of all charges not covered by my health insurance plan.

Why Are Alternative Health Insurance Plans More Affordable?

Alternative plans like those from Student Cover are more affordable because:

                      • They are tailored specifically for student needs.
                      • Operate on a group coverage basis, spreading costs across many students.
                      • Use preferred provider organizations (PPOs) to keep costs down.
                      • Eliminate unnecessary extras while still maintaining UVA waiver compliance.

Despite the lower cost, these plans still offer excellent protection for emergency care, mental health, hospitalization, and more, often with zero deductibles and nationwide coverage.

How to Pick a Health Insurance Plan?

When evaluating your options, make sure the plan includes:

                            • In-network access in Virginia
                            • Comprehensive coverage (mental, maternity, emergency, primary)
                            • Affordable deductible and premium
                            • Direct billing or cashless claims
                            • 24/7 assistance
