Introduction

The University of Connecticut (UConn) automatically enrolls all students into its University-sponsored health insurance plan, known as the UConn Student Health Insurance Plan (UConn SHIP). This coverage is intended to ensure that every student has access to essential medical services while studying, regardless of their circumstances. The cost of UConn SHIP is billed directly to the student’s tuition account each semester. While UConn SHIP is a comprehensive plan designed to meet the diverse healthcare needs of the student population, it may be more expensive than other available options. For this reason, UConn allows students who already have an alternative qualifying health insurance policy, such as coverage from a parent, spouse, employer, or an approved private provider like Student Cover, to apply for a health insurance waiver. This waiver, if approved, removes the UConn SHIP charge from the student’s account, enabling them to continue using their plan.

What is an Insurance Fee Waiver?

An insurance fee waiver is a formal process through which a student requests an exemption from paying for and being enrolled in the university’s default health insurance plan. This process involves proving that the student already has a health insurance plan that meets or exceeds the university’s minimum coverage requirements.

If a student fails to submit a waiver application before the posted deadline, UConn SHIP enrollment becomes automatic and non-refundable for that term.

Why are Alternative Health Insurance Plans More Affordable?

Although UConn SHIP  offers strong coverage, its premium rates may be higher than certain alternative plans available on the market. There are several reasons for this:

                • Different Risk Pooling: UConn SHIP covers a wide population with varying health risks, while private plans, especially those designed for young, healthy students, may have lower average claims costs.
                • Flexible Coverage Options: Private plans such as those from Student Cover allow students to choose from different deductible levels, coinsurance rates, and optional add-ons, tailoring the cost to their needs.
                • Targeted Student Products: Some insurers specialize in student health coverage, offering streamlined benefits that meet university waiver criteria without excess, unnecessary coverage.
                • Global & Domestic Plans: International student insurance providers often offer competitive global coverage at reduced rates.
                • Network Structures: Certain insurers use more cost-efficient provider networks, reducing expenses without compromising quality.

However, lower cost does not always mean better value; students must ensure the alternative plan fully satisfies UConn’s requirements before purchasing.

Q1. Is UConn SHIP mandatory for all students?

It is mandatory unless you submit and receive approval for a waiver.

Q2. What if my insurance plan is from outside the U.S.?

It may qualify if it meets UConn’s waiver criteria, but some foreign plans lack U.S. network coverage, leading to denial.

Q3. Can I reapply if my waiver is denied?

Yes, if it is still within the waiver period and you have obtained a compliant plan.

Q4. Will my parents’ employer insurance qualify?

Often yes, provided it includes Connecticut coverage and meets other requirements.

Q5. Do I need to reapply for a waiver every year?

Yes. Waivers must be renewed each academic year.

Q6. Does UConn SHIP cover me while travelling outside the U.S.?

Yes, but coverage is primarily U.S.-based; check for international benefits before travel.

Q7. How soon will my waiver be processed?

Typically, within 5–7 business days after submission.

                                                                                    Q8. Can I waive mid-year?

No. Waivers are accepted only during official enrollment periods.

Q9. Are dental and vision included in UConn SHIP?

Q10. What happens if I do nothing?

You will automatically be enrolled in UConn SHIP and charged the premium.

Q11. Where can I find the official  University of Connecticut health insurance waiver information online?
