Introduction

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) has a mandatory health insurance policy to ensure students have access to comprehensive healthcare while pursuing their studies. For full-time undergraduate and graduate students, enrollment in the university’s Student Blue Health Insurance Plan is automatic unless they submit and receive approval for a waiver. This plan provides coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, preventive services, and other medically necessary care. The intent behind this requirement is to safeguard students from unexpected medical bills that could disrupt their education.

However, not all students need to purchase the university plan. Those with an existing health insurance policy that meets UNCG’s minimum coverage standards can opt out through a formal waiver process. This guide covers the plan details, cost comparisons, waiver procedures, deadlines, and alternative plan options such as Student Cover.

What is an Insurance Fee Waiver?

An insurance fee waiver is an official process through which students request an exemption from the university’s automatic health insurance enrollment. To qualify, students must show proof of alternative health coverage that meets UNCG’s waiver criteria. Typical waiver requirements include:

            • Minimum total benefit/coverage of $100,000 (USD) per accident or illness
            • Plan deductible of no more than $500 (USD)
            • Minimum of $50,000 (USD) for medical evacuation
            • Minimum of $25,000 (USD) for repatriation coverage
            • The policy must be active for the entire duration of the academic semester

If the waiver request is approved, the student’s insurance charge will be removed from their tuition bill. If it is denied, the student will remain enrolled in the university plan and must pay the premium.

Why are Alternative Health Insurance Plans More Affordable?

Many students find that private or specialized student health insurance plans, such as student cover are more affordable than the university’s standard offering. Reasons include:

                  • Targeted coverage: Alternative plans often cater specifically to the needs of young adults and international students.
                  • Lower premiums: Since students are generally healthier and younger, some private insurers offer reduced rates.
                  • Affordable options: Students can choose plans with coverage they need, avoiding unnecessary add-ons.
                  • Different provider networks: Plans with smaller or more specialized provider networks may offer lower prices while still meeting waiver standards.
                  • International student plans: For students coming from abroad, study-abroad insurance policies often cost less but still fulfil the university’s waiver requirements.

How to Apply for the UNCG Health Insurance Waiver

Follow these steps to apply for a waiver:

                                • Enrollments or Waivers must be submitted through the Student Blue portal.
                                • Before access to the portal will be granted, students must register for the required number of credit hours in a degree-seeking on-campus program to be eligible for student insurance.
                                • For returning students, the StudentBlue portal opens in early May for the Fall semester and early November for the Spring semester.
                                • New students become eligible to enroll/waive upon their registration.
                                • There is a two-week appeal period if students miss the Sept. 10 waiver deadline. The Student Blue portal will remain open to receive enrollments or waivers through September 24, 2025. Once the appeal period closes, no further appeals for enrollments or waivers will be accepted for the fall 2025 semester
                                • Due to increased portal activity, waiver verification may be delayed during May and June
