In this guide, you will get to know about the IELTS scoring system, the assessment criteria, and the implications of band scores for study abroad applications.
The IELTS result is obtained by averaging the marks for the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The scores for each module range from band 0 to band 9.
The final overall IELTS score is rounded to the nearest half or whole band.
Overall Band Score Formula
Overall Band Score=Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking / 4
For instance, if you get 6.5 in Listening, 7 in Reading, 8 in Writing, and 7 in Speaking
So IELTS Overall Band Score=6.5+7+8+7 / 4 = 7.125 which would be considered 7

When examiners check your IELTS Writing, they look at 4 things:
Each assessment area is scored from 0 to 9, and the average of the four constitutes the final writing band score.
Criteria | What It Means |
---|---|
Task Achievement / Task Response | Did you answer the question fully, give all details, and stay on topic? |
Coherence and Cohesion | Is your writing clear and logical? Are ideas connected with linking words? |
Lexical Resource | Did you use a good range of vocabulary naturally and correctly? |
Grammatical Range and Accuracy | Is your grammar correct? Did you use different sentence types and punctuation properly? |
The IELTS Speaking test is an in-person interaction with a certified examiner and is scored using the following criteria:
The capacity to articulate with clarity and maintain a steady flow all while organizing the logical thoughts without any stops or hesitations.
Evaluates the depth of vocabulary and its precision and flexibility in a variety of contexts. Proper use of idioms and phrase patterns is rewarded.
Evaluates syntactic complexity and accuracy. Repetitive mistakes / too many structures/points in the same range also significantly decrease the score.
Focuses on being understood clearly by native speakers, speech melody, and pronunciation stress.
As in Writing, each criterion is rated from 0 to 9 and then averaged to produce the final Speaking band score.
