The IELTS Band Score Chart shows how your IELTS test results are graded on a scale from 0 to 9, with each band representing your English proficiency level, from non-user (0) to expert (9).

In this guide, you will get to know about the IELTS scoring system, the assessment criteria, and the implications of band scores for study abroad applications.

IELTS Band Score: How Are They Calculated?

The IELTS result is obtained by averaging the marks for the four components (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The scores for each module range from band 0 to band 9.

The final overall IELTS  score is rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

            Overall Band Score Formula

              Overall Band Score=Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking / 4

For instance, if you get 6.5 in Listening, 7 in  Reading, 8 in Writing, and 7 in Speaking

                  So IELTS Overall Band Score=6.5+7+8+7 / 4 = 7.125 which would be considered 7

How it would be considered approx :

                      • If the average score of all four modules is 6.25, it is rounded up to 6.5.
                      • If the average is 7.75, it becomes 8.0.

This systematic way ensures fairness in outcomes.

The modules are designed to test different components of language competence:

                          • Listening and Reading are quantitatively scored, with a right answer increasing the score by one point.
                          • Writing and Speaking are rated holistically with performance descriptors.

                                          IELTS Writing Assessment Criteria

When examiners check your IELTS Writing, they look at 4 things:

Did you answer the question completely?

                                                • Gave all the required information, explained your ideas, and didn’t go off-topic.

Is your writing easy to follow?

                                                  • Sentences are connected, ideas flow well, and you used linking words (like "however," "because," "for example").

                                                  Did you use good vocabulary?

                                                    • Used a range of words naturally and correctly without repeating too much.

Is your grammar correct and varied?

                                                      • Used different sentence structures, correct tenses, and proper punctuation.

Each assessment area is scored from 0 to 9, and the average of the four constitutes the final writing band score.

                                                                1. Fluency and Coherence
