Most Colleges/Universities and countries have issued mandates that International Students hold student health insurance as part of their trade program enrollment or visa obligations. It's important for International Students to understand the requirements of their chosen destination/school prior to Departing.
Most plans will provide coverage for in-patient care (Hospital Stays) and or outpatient care (Doctors Visits) as well as Emergency Room visits. Coverage for prescriptions, tests, and in some cases therapy will also be covered. Specifics will vary based on the plan and Providers and therefore must be verified prior to any purchase.
Most health plans have a predetermined network of hospitals/facilities/physicians to choose from in order to receive the benefits identified in the policy. There are usually other hospitals/facilities/physicians in your area that might not be part of your provider's network and you may still be able to visit these doctors/facilities for treatment/reimbursement. This will depend on your specific policy.
Most Student Health Insurance companies have different provisions regarding pre-existing conditions. Each plan provides a different amount of coverage based on the provider including but not limited to a waiting period for some / partial coverage or not covering at all. It is imperative that you read the policy details before purchase.
If your insurance expires while you are still studying, you may need to renew your existing policy or purchase a new one to maintain continuous coverage and comply with university or visa requirements.
